THE ARRAN HERITAGE PROJECT - THE HIGH SCHOOL

Information on Arran High School.

Arran High School is situated in Lamlash and is the Island of Arran’s only Senior Secondary School. The current school roll is 327 and there are 36 teaching staff. The original building was completed in 1939 and requisitioned for war use. It started being used as a joint Primary/Junior Secondary School in 1946. At this time the school was known as “Lamlash Junior Secondary”.

Until the early 1970s pupils wishing to continue their education to Higher level would have to board at Rothesay Academy for the later years of their schooling. In the summer of 1985 a major project was started which incorporated the building of a new extension to the school, the upgrading of the original main building and the removal of the hutted accommodation.  The project was completed in 1987.

A new school is under construction on the former playing fields of the present school. This state of the art facility will open in August 2007. With the new school operational, the old building will be demolished.
